According to newspapers Diario Deportivo and El Tiempo of Colombia, Colombian international goalkeeper Libis Arenas flew to Rome to complete his physical exam in order to become the goalkeeper of the future for Lazio. The Envigado FC goalkeeper notified several media outlets in the South American country that this move was delayed due to visa issues.
The 20-year-old Arenas needs to prepare physically as the Italian league will demand a stronger frame for the wiry youngster. He will also be considered one of the goalkeepers that will inherit the spot from Celeste legend Angelo Peruzzi. He also wants to prepare for the upcoming World Youth Festival to be held in the French city of Toulon from May 15-24th.
Arenas caught the eye of several clubs in last year’s U-20 World Cup with a Colombian squad that came in as one of the favorites to lift the title. They were able to soundly defeat the best team in Europe, Italy, but would ultimately succumb to eventual champs Argentina.
Arenas, alongside Monterrey forward Hugo Rodallega, River Plate’s Radamel Falcao Garcia and Juan Pablo Toja, Boca Juniors’ Freddy Guarín, and Atlético Nacional’s Christian Marrugo are all the flagbearers for the new generation of Colombian football as these youngsters begin to focus on next year’s Copa America.
