Lazio march into their home debut at Stadio Olimpico after a hard-fought away win over Sampdoria last weekend.
BACKGROUND
The Capital club did not have a pleasant summer, as Lazio lost the services of outstanding coach Roberto Mancini and stopper Sinisa Mihajlovic to Inter Milan, while target man Bernardo Corradi made his way to Valencia. But Lazio made a good case last weekend, and in the midweek, why these respective players may not be missed.
With a well-struck penalty by the flamboyant Paolo Di Canio, who made his first Serie A appearance in eight years, Lazio beat a 10-man Sampdoria by a score of 1-0. But wherever Di Canio travels, controversy seems to follow, as his outspoken personality has already affected the side. A good move started by Di Canio made Sampdoria goalkeeper Francesco Antonioli bring down Simone Inzaghi in the box, and a verbal disagreement between Inzaghi and Di Canio erupted as to who should take the penalty. The latter demanded to take the kick, which strayed from Coach Caso’s instructions and much to Inzaghi’s dismay. The chemistry between these two Lazio forwards will be something to watch on Sunday. In midweek UEFA Cup action, Lazio easily beat Metahlurh Donetsk 3-0 in Ukraine, thus giving the side added confidence.
Reggina go into Week 2 after a scoreless draw at home to Udinese, which marked coach Walter Mazzarri’s Serie A debut after successfully guiding Livorno to a historic promotion. This Reggina side will once again hope to stay out of relegation trouble, which they narrowly escaped last season. A good mix of experienced players and talented youngsters should give Reggina a good chance of survival. Mazzarri’s side were able to hold on to a point after Ivan Franceschini saw red for a horrendous challenge on former Reggina man David Di Michele. Striker Emiliano Bonazzoli will be hoping to improve on last week’s form, as he had many chances to score but could not capitalize.
Predicted Formations
Lazio: Peruzzi; Oddo, Couto, Siviglia, Zauri; A. Filippini, Giannichedda, Liverani, Cesar; S. Inzaghi, Di Canio
Reggina: Pavarini; Cannarsa, De Rosa, Zamboni; Mesto, Tedesco, Mozart, G. Colucci, Balestri; Bonazzoli, Nakamura
Players to Watch
Di Canio/Inzaghi: The two Lazio forwards will be hoping to get the job done, and it will be interesting to see what happens if the referee points to the spot in their favor.
Emiliano Bonazzoli: Skillful forward who will try to one-up his display last weekend by putting Reggina on the scoreboard.
